Globe trotting Indian fusion magician returns to New Haven for encore performance

New Haven, CT- May 27, 2012- Shreeyash Palshikar, Indian fusion magician, returns to New Haven for an unprecedented third encore performance after selling out his last two runs. He is on an East Coast tour that includes headlining at Illusions Magic Bar in Baltimore, MD the Bickford Theater in Morristown, NJ and Willard’s Parlour of Mystery in Washington DC.

Second-generation Indian-American magician Shreeyash offers audiences a rare peek into the mysterious world of Indian magic in this fun, enlightening, family-friendly stage show. He is on a personal quest to preserve India’s most ancient and threatened performing art.

“Jadoo, or Indian magic is a dying art that very few people have seen,” says Palshikar, “so I am adapting ancient Indian illusions for the Western stage and trying to keep this art alive.” Palshikar relishes the intellectual aspects of magic as much as the theatrical elements, and views magic as “the perfect way to explore life’s deeper questions, secrets, and mysteries.”

Shreeyash keeps this ancient art of India alive by studying the magical secrets of the Indian magicians, then adapting them to suit a modern Western performing environment. To hone his craft, he has spent years living and studying in India, and studied with leading Western magicians, acting teachers, and playwrights in Chicago, London, and in Edinburgh. A post-doctoral fellowship in South Asian studies at Yale first brought him to New Haven in 2008.

His show features: sword swallowing, the East Indian thread mystery, the Waters of India, and a demonstration of Kundalini energy. It also includes a dangerous demo of juggling the Nepali battle daggers called ‘kukkris,’ and the beautiful, rarely seen ‘Sands of India’ illusion.

Multiple Emmy award-winning New York director Alexander ‘Sandy’ Marshall had directed Shreeyash in the debut performance of Jadoo in 2011 at Lyric Hall, John Cavaliere’s lovingly restored music hall located at 827 Whalley Ave. Shreeyash then toured the show nationally.

Shreeyash has performed worldwide including: Boston, Chicago, Dubai, London, Bombay, Jaipur, and Seoul. This year, he will perform in New Haven one night only on Wednesday May 27 at 7:30pm, and will be available after the show to talk about the mysteries of India.
