Inspired by actual recurring dreams that Akira Kurosawa had, Dreams addresses themes such as childhood, spirituality, art, death, and mistakes and transgressions made by humans against nature. The film was screened out of competition at the 1990 Cannes Film Festival, and has consistently received positive reviews.
